History of Sports Action Cameras: The Inside Story

One of the more recent trends is to use GoPro Cheap Alternative action cameras for outdoor recreation such as surfing, skiing, hunting, or fishing. These devices are ideal for such activities because of their durable, waterproof housing.

One perspective that is incredible to watch is the view of a dog on the hunt. Again, when these animals are charging through marshes there is a substantial amount of light that reflects from the water’s surface and there is room to improve upon this problem with the use of a polarization filter.

One of the best things about the outdoors is the breathtaking beauty that nature provides us with. Any outdoor enthusiast can appreciate the scenery that they are able to be immersed in while doing their favorite activity. Whether it is fishing, surfing, snowboarding, hiking, or hunting there is always plenty of natural greatness to witness. Polarization filters are designed to capture the vibrant colors that nature has to offer. These lens additions reduce color saturation that is found while filming allowing the vivid tones to be at their full potential. Majestic scenery should be viewed in its natural form without the worries of having your image becoming distorted due to sunlight.

GoPro Cheap Alternative – Sports action camera technology is progressing at a rate of knots: as the list of features gets bigger, physically the cameras get smaller, tougher and more versatile. Features such as full HD, 4K recording, 10+ MP (megapixel) still images and extreme element resistance are now the norm for the majority of modern sports action cameras, which raises the question, what next?

Tips for Choosing Lightdow LD4000 1080P HD Sports Action Camera Bundle with DSP:NT96650 Chip, 1.5-Inch LPS-TFT LCD, 170° Wide Angle Lens and Bonus Battery (Pink)

My GoPro Tips

I have used every version of the GoPro Camera Systems in both professional and personal projects. There really is nothing like a GoPro, but as with any camera system, there are a few tricks of the trade to make sure that you lock in the perfect sequence that you have been dreaming of. Here are a few of my favorites.

Here are a few of my favorite GoPro Techniques:

Tip 1: If mounting your GoPro camera with the suction cup mount make sure that you clean the surface prior to adhering suction. Any particles or debris can cause the mount to fail.

Tip 2: When using the suction cup mount ALWAYS tie a thin string to tether the camera to something secure. For example, if your camera is on the hood of a car, tie a string to the windshield wiper arm. Make sure that your string is not too long and test the length to see if your string will catch your camera before hitting an object.

Note: the measuring is kind of critical here, don't have your camera become detached from the suction mount with the idea of it being saved by the string tied to it only to have the camera swing and hit something say like a tree. Which in my case cracked the casing. Ugg.

Tip 3: If you are going to mount the camera to an ATV, Motorcycle, or BMX bike I tend to like the adhesive mounts reinforced with a little duct-tape or Premium Grade Gaffers Tape (black). Gaffers tape unlike duct tape will NOT leave adhesive residue behind when removed.

Tip 4: Make sure that you change the position of your mounting locations. There is nothing more boring then finally editing your video only to find that you have maybe 1 or 2 good perspectives. Think about mounting the camera where you would never dream of with a traditional camera. Some GoPro creative ideas I have used:

Mounting the GoPro to a boom pole and telescoping up 10 ft. This works awesome for shooting bands and getting above the crowd. Some of my best footage when shooting live events comes from this technique. Note: If your going to attach this to a boom pole or for that matter any tripod you will need the GoPro Tripod Mount. These little suckers are good to have and I typically have several with me on any shoot.

Warning: watch the ceiling though when using a boom pole and ALWAYS use a non-conducting material like plastic or wood. Never metal as you could hit a wire or open light and electrocute yourself.

Mounting the Hero to a wheel well of a car or truck.

Mounting the Hero to the fork of your bicycle and aiming it up at you or behind you.

Tip 5: If you are using the camera on the water for surfing or for your jet ski you will want to think about something. Some rigs can sink fast depending on your setup. I highly recommend the GoPro Camera Floaty Back Door as this little orange lifeguard will save your camera from certain doom if it falls off during a wet shoot. Plus the orange color makes it very easy to see.

Tip 6: If you are planning to use your kick ass GoPro in the water, or for that matter in the snow, you will want to invest in the Anti Fog Inserts. You may not even realize it when the change of temp happens fog becomes a factor and a very unwelcome visitor. This has happened to me 2 times (I finally discovered these gems) and it is something that WILL ruin your entire shoot if not remedied.

Tip 7: The most popular tip on this page this month. Don't get caught on your shoot without a Wasabi Power Battery and Charger Kit There is a simple rule when shooting on location, make sure you have 3x the amount of power / batteries than you actually need. This is super important! Many factors drain power including fluctuations in temps and vibrational loss even with the replaceable lithium packs.

Tip 8: If you plan on shooting underwater footage (not just in and out of the water as in typical water shots) you need to have the GoPro Dive Housing to provide maximum photo and video sharpness underwater in all resolutions. Without this Dive Housing your imagery and videos will be blurry and the vignetting around the edges will make the footage unusable. Waterproof to 197'/60m, the Dive Housing is ideal for diving, snorkeling and any underwater filming scenario.

I recommend that if you have never tested this camera underwater you should do so before a shoot. It's not as easy to use as a professional rig but it's just a little tricky. The underwater footage you get will be worth every penny.

Tips on Capturing Sports Action Camera Shots

As the popularity of action cameras continues to grow, so does the competition between manufacturers, all fighting for the biggest piece of the action sports market. But with so many cameras out there, deciding where to invest your hard earned cash can be a difficult decision.

A particular camera making headlines at the moment is the Sony Action Cam - Sony's first true foray into the world of action sports cameras. The Action Cam, as well as packing all the features you'd expect - HD recording, durability, wide angle lens etc. - boasts some truly ground-breaking features.

So how does the Sony stand up against one of the veterans of the camera world, GoPro. Below will outline some key comparisons of the Sony Action Cam and GoPro's newest camera - the GoPro HD2.

Technical

Full 1080p HD video recording has become a standard feature for the majority of modern action cameras, and both the Sony and GoPro offer full HD recording at 30FPS (frames per second).

However, what really sets these cameras apart is how they perform at 720p. While the GoPro offers 720p at a maximum of 60FPS, the Sony allows you to shoot in 720p at an astonishing 120FPS. This '4x slow-mode' is as good as it gets for super slow-motion editing and playback.

In addition to video, both the Sony and GoPro are capable of capturing high-quality still images, at a maximum of 16MP and 11MP respectively. For the adventurous video-makers out there, both cameras also have a time-lapse feature.

The latest feature to grace many modern cameras is Wi-Fi connectivity, which typically allows users to utilise smartphone syncing, live streaming and social sharing, amongst other things. The Sony Action Cam is available in two models, with the HDR-AS15 packing Wi-Fi as standard. For GoPro users to enjoy Wi-Fi functionality, they will first need to purchase the GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac accessory, which once snapped onto the back of the camera, offers wireless control via the GoPro mobile application or Wi-Fi remote.

Physical

While technical specifications are undoubtedly the first thing prospective buyers will look at, the physical aspects - size, shape, mounting options etc. - of a camera are also important to consider. For example, the Sony is physically long and slim, which makes it ideal for mounting to goggle straps, or just about anywhere else for that matter. The GoPro is more square in shape, which means it can't be attached to goggles, however due to its centralised lens and wide base, is great for mounting to kit, be it handlebars, a surfboard, or the bonnet of a car.

A major advantage of the Sony over the GoPro is that it has image stabilisation, which ultimately results in smoother playback. However, this results in the Sony having a slightly lower battery life than the GoPro, which can run continuously for around two hours, depending on what it's being used for.

Extras

One of GoPro's biggest selling points is undoubtedly the vast array of accessories and mounts it has on offer, from its selection of 'BacPacs', including the Wi-Fi BacPac as mentioned above, to the Dive Housing, which allows users to take the camera as deep as 60 meters underwater.

The Sony, while rich in features, is new to the market, so is currently a little light on the accessories front. That said, it does come with Waterproof Housing, which matches its GoPro counterpart for depth.

Conclusion

Both of these models are more than worthy considerations for anyone looking for a new action camera. While the Sony has a few more 'headline' features and comes Wi-Fi-ready, the GoPro has long been a part of action sports culture, and is therefore built on experience and demand. Each of these cameras has advantages over the other, so if choosing between the two, be sure to consider exactly how and where you plan on using it, and choose the one which you feel is best suited to you and your sport.
